The first three weeks of the season in Colombia are now in the books with some good and not so good results! The first week started very hot on the first day with a good number of teen fish up to 22 pounds in the rain and evidently it rained a lot up river making the next few days very slow, also the rising water brought in some very muddy water not helping maters. This first group had to adjust as peacock bass found themselves backing up into the jungle again. Payara were at least biting in the rapids.

The next week we would find ourselves still in somewhat muddy water that came up two solid feet and this had us working our butt’s off. By the end of the week some bigger fish beginning to play once again and the biggest fish came in at 20 pounds, by the end of this week the water started to drop fast once again and the waters began to clean up. This was my toughest week at Las Lagunas in two seasons now.The last week became a different story as the waters began to drop even faster and what we found was that peacocks bass were starting to guard there young as evidently the rising waters of the first group triggered a spawn of the bigger peacock bass. Last season didn’t show any spawning activity through the 2017/18 season. No matter we caught many teener fish this week up to 21 pounds. Best plugs were High Rollers Rip Rollers in 5.5 and 6.5 inch sizes, Yozuri’s and yes my Bagley Minnow B’s in the 5″ size.

Overall the Las Lagunas camp service was still great, the food was great, the beer was good and cold and the company was all great!!!! The new seats in the boats were fantastic as well. The outlook for the remaining season is very good as waters were still dropping when I left.
